Volunteer Needs: 3-4 volunteers to be committee members participating in garden activities; garden preparation, planting and maintenance.
Overview:
The Garden Club was established by a few dedicated parents during the 2024 school year. The goal is to connect young students with the natural world through hands-on planting, harvesting, and care of a school garden. Students learn about seasonal crops, sustainable practices, and the blessings of nurturing life from the earth.
Why It Matters:
Rooted in the Islamic principle of stewardship (khalifah) over the Earth, this program teaches responsibility, patience, and gratitude for Allah’s creations. Garden Club inspires a sense of wonder and environmental consciousness in students, helping them develop healthy habits and a deeper appreciation for nature’s rhythms.
Intentions:
Gardens are a recurring theme in the Qur’an and a form of Sadaqah and Sunnah. Fostering Iman, faith is always compared to the growing and continued care of a garden - it's an analogy of growing your Iman.
Gardens are a critical part of childhood learning: parents want their children to experience gardening but are limited by time and resources.
Intention is not to preserve the garden but to preserve our children experiences. Gardening is meant to teach children to be gentle, to observe closely, to trample and make mistakes; while knowing that gardens undergo a natural dying process.
The garden will be sponsored by parent donations of plants and supplies, supplemented with grants and fundraising.
Volunteer Opportunity:
We are seeking dedicated parent and community volunteers to support the garden throughout the growing season. Your time and effort directly enrich the student experience and ensure the success of this living classroom.
